ABOUT TURNING TIDES
Turning Tides is a project of Southend Association of Voluntary Services (SAVS) and carries out community based projects in conjunction with partner organisations. Turning Tides promotes active citizenship and offers a range of activities for young people living in disadvantaged areas of Central Southend. The project encourages involvement in social activities, volunteering, training and environmental projects. All Turning Tides staff are Community Safety Accredited by Essex Police.
Turning Tides began the Triple T's project, which is funded by BBC Children in Need, in April 2011. Team Leaders, Hayley and Jo deliver weekly clubs for children aged 8-12 years of age. The Clubs are held at Centre Place on the Woodgrange Estate and also the Unitarian Meeting House in Grange Gardens. Hayley and Jo deliver these Clubs alongside a team of local volunteers and give youngsters the chance to try out new activities, such as first aid and football coaching and learn more about the place they live through visits to and from the local fire station, coastguards and police station. The aim is to give them the opportunity to broaden their outlook and achieve their full potential.
Turning Tides is delivering Personalised Travel Planning in Southend with funding from the Southend Local Sustainable Transport Fund Programme, delivered by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and funded by the Department for Transport. Personalised Travel Planning is engaging local communities around transport to gain insight to local issues and recognise barriers to using different forms of transport. Our Team Leaders, Hayley and Lee with teams of Travel Adviser Volunteers will be providing help and advice with travel and transport queries.
Turning Tides are working in partnership with Southend Borough Council, Citizens Advice Bureau, HARP and the NHS as part of Warm and Well on Sea. Turning Tides volunteers carry out home visits giving advice on how to stay warm and healthy over the winter months.
Turning Tides has also joined with a variety of partners to produce fun and attractive story books with a mixture of positive messages for children age 6-10 years. The first book, "Mo and his New Trainers" was developed in partnership with the Home Office giving an anti-bullying message. The second book "Happy Healthy Mo" was produced in partnership with NHS South East Essex and gives a healthy eating message. The third book,"Oh No Mo" was funded by Olympus Keymed and NHS South East Essex, providing children with positive messages around road safety and active living. The fourth edition of the Mo story books is funded through Essex County Fire & Rescue Service, NHS and Olympus Keymed. This is the latest book in the series has just been launched: "Mo and the Secret Smokers" has an anti-smoking and fire safety message. All of the Mo books are written by Turning Tides Manager, Anthony Quinn and illustrated by local artist, John Bulley.

MUM RECECIVES NEW BIKE FOR TAKING PART IN TURNING TIDES TRAVEL SURVEY
Southend Mum, Rebecca Chipperfield has won a gleaming new bicycle for theing the Borough's 1,000th person to take part in a free personalised travel planning scheme.
Turning Tides Team Leaders and specially trained volunteers have been knocking on residents doors in Milton and St Laurence wards to discuss their travel arrangements and offer support and information about alternative options such as cycling, walking or using public transport.
Hayley Duff, Turning Tides Team Leader, who spoke to Rebecca said the team had been working hard
and had been well received by residents. She said "We are encouraged by how many people are open to the idea of sustainable transport and Rebecca is a great example of that".
Southend on Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Public Prtection, Waste and Transport, Coucillor Tony Cox said " We are delighted by the success of this scheme so far, which we hope to roll out across the Borough in future years. It is evident that residents may use their cars through force of habit, or without knowing enough about other ways to travel locally. However, once people have been reminded of, or introduced to more sustainable ways of undertaking their journeys, they are very receptive to these new suggestions".
Along with the bike, Rebecca received a tow for her young children to ride in as well.
Turning Tides Team Leaders and Travel Planning Volunteers are now conducting surveys in the Victoria ward.
