The Essex Society aims to promote and encourage the public study of British Family history, genealogy, heraldry, and local history with particular reference to Essex, and to promote the preservation, and accessibility of archival material. Details of the constitution which governs the society can be found on the website.
The area covered by the ESFH is the old Essex county with the exception of 'London Boroughs' which are considered to be in the area of East London FHS and Waltham Forest FHS.
Our main meetings are held monthly in Galleywood. We have monthly branch meetings in Colchester, Harlow and Southend-on-Sea. Our Branch in Saffron Walden meets every 3 months.
Meetings are open to both members and non-members but priority is always given to our members.
For the benefit of members who cannot get to the local meetings in Essex we operate a CDs by Post service from our online shop.
Research on a particular surname or family is not organised by the Society, but members with similar aims and interests can get in touch with each other through the Society.
We also offer Search Services to members and non-members.

Each of our branches has a volunteer contact (see contact us at top of home page) who is able to provide help and information to members by email regarding the area covered by the branch. Our Southend Branch covers Southend and Southern Essex and the email contact for these enquiries is Mrs Heather Feather.
Meetings of the South East Branch are held at The avenue Baptist Church Hall, Milton Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, SS0 7JX
Meetings are normally held on the first Saturday of the month, except August, beginning at 2.30pm. The doors open at 1.30pm when the Help Desk will be available.
