A further group of businesses can now apply for funding aimed at helping those businesses whose finances have been badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Southend Borough Council Discretionary Business Grants (Closing date 28th August)

Southend-on-Sea Council received £1.94 million from Central Government’s Discretionary Business Grants scheme, to enable non-repayable grants to be paid to some businesses which are struggling to survive due to a significant loss of income and on-going fixed property costs.

The Government has announced the closure of the business grant schemes and that all final grant payments must be paid by 30th September 2020.

We still have funds available to enable a wider range of businesses to benefit from this funding. Applications for the second round of funding can be made from Monday, 3rd August until Friday, 28th August to allow time for the processing of the final grants.

Applications are now invited from businesses with a Rateable Value up to and including £59,999 from any eligible businesses and charities excluding businesses that we are not able to support on this occasion (please see list of exemptions below). The Businesses applying must not have received other Government grants, including a Small Business Grant, a Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant, or a first round discretionary grant.

Businesses are invited to apply which have relatively high ongoing fixed property-related costs, and which can demonstrate they’ve suffered an income fall due to the pandemic. The level of grant to be paid is £2,500.

We may have funding left after all applications have been assessed and maybe able to increase the funding offered to businesses paid in the discretionary scheme both first and second phases.

It is really important that you include all the information requested on the application form. If we have to ask you for further information there may not be sufficient time to process the grant.

The application period will close at midnight on 28th August 2020.

Southend Borough Council Business Grants to support 30% of costs for Business Growth Initiatives

The South East Business Boost (SEBB) programme has secured further funding to extend the delivery of business grants to Small Medium Enterprises(SME’s). These grants are non repayable and cover 30% of the costs incurred by a business to implement business developments that will generate business growth and employment. Applications must be made and approved before costs can be incurred.

From 15th June 2020, the popular 30% Growth Grant of between £1,000 and £10,000 can be accessed by Essex SMEs who have not received any other type of support from the SEBB programme to date.

 

  1. WHAT IS THE GROWTH GRANT?
  • A 30% Grant for eligible Essex SMEs who are in the position to or are planning to carry out a Growth project.

 

  1. WHO CAN ACCESS THE GROWTH GRANT?
  • The Growth Grant is available to support eligible small to medium enterprises and trading sole traders whohave not previously received support via the SEBB programme and require funding for their specific eligible Growth project.

 

  1. HOW MUCH GROWTH GRANT FUNDING CAN ELIGIBLE SMEs ACCESS?
  • The total Growth Projectcost must be between a minimum of £3,333 and a maximum of £35,000.  The SME would self-fund 70% of the project cost and the Growth Grant would fund the remaining 30% from a minimum of £1,000 to a maximum of £10,000.

Shared Space Charity Shop | eBay Stores

Shared Space stores have restarted their Boost Fund Grants. 

Each charity shop awards £150/month to a local group or organisation typically within two miles of the premises. The Shared Space shops are looking to fund creativity, life giving activities, and things that injects a positive vibe into the local community.

Beneficiaries of grants will predominantly be people in low income ‘households’ or activities benefiting those people.

Organisations do not need to be formally constituted to apply and can do so once a year and will normally not have received a grant from Southend Emergency Fund which is another grant programme under the auspices of Shared Space.

Southend Emergency Fund – Open for donations 

We have created an emergency fund so the most vulnerable, in the Southend borough, anywhere from Leigh to Shoebury, can obtain the financial help they need to get them through this difficult time. We will be using existing organisations, agencies, community groups and charities, who are already in touch with the most at risk. This will be the fastest way to get help to where it is needed and minimise abuse of the system. We will be able to direct the funds to which ever channels are able to remain open to support those needing help.

Essex Community Foundation – Coronavirus Response and Recovery Programme

Grants of up to £15,000 are available through the Essex Coronavirus Response and Recovery Programme to help voluntary and community organisations that are in crisis as a result of the pandemic and need emergency funding to keep vital services running. Priority will be given to those delivering vital services to older and vulnerable people, organisations helping to relieve pressure on public services and those co-ordinating a local community response.

LATEST COVID 19 Update (09/06/20)

We are still receiving a large number of applications for Emergency funding during these troubled times. I am reporting these back to the Trustees at regular ‘remote’ meetings. Very urgent cases are considered immediately.

Following the latest Emergency meeting, we have been able to offer nearly £50,000  between many local charities and groups (nearly £150,000 since the pandemic began). ECF and the Lottery have both allocated significant funds to help with the immediate effects of the Pandemic, and are continuing their support at this critical time.

However, the Trustees recognise the potential problems which may now arise as communities begin to ease out of the current Lockdown restrictions. The focus of this is for vulnerable children, families and the isolated elderly.

Leigh-on-Sea Town Council Coronavirus Emergency Community Fund

Leigh-on-Sea Town Council’s Coronavirus Emergency Community Fund. £10,000 has currently been set aside for the fund, from an existing volunteer programme but Council will consider further funding in due course if necessary.

External not-for-profits groups/organisations along with charities, are welcome to apply for grants from £250 up to £1000, to directly help support residents within Leigh. Additional applications can also be made again where proof of expenditure is provided.

Applications cannot be considered from political parties, commercial organisations or for projects that benefit individuals, private businesses, projects that fall outside the Town Council remit, or those that improve private land or property.

Grants will be reviewed within one week of being received by a panel of Councillors.

Leigh-on-Sea Town Council Grant Award Scheme Applications Now Open (Closing date 30th September)

Applications are now being taken for Leigh-on-Sea Town Council’s Grant Award Scheme. The Council offer grants of up to £500 for charitable, not-for-profit organisations and community initiatives throughout the town.

The grant can also be awarded in the form of a bursary to cover the cost of room hire at Leigh Community Centre. This is ideal for organisations who need an accessible space to run events, workshops or meetings that will benefit the local community.

Multiple bursaries can be awarded at each intake, with the next deadline for applications being Wednesday 30th September 2020. Leigh-on-Sea Town Council have previously supported Leigh Art Trail, Blade Education, and Leigh Regatta as well as many other groups.

South East Creative Grants for businesses

We know that many businesses in the creative sector, as with many others, are finding this an extremely difficult time. South East Creatives has been supporting companies to develop their businesses and we will try to continue to do this. We have found ways to move many of our workshops and mentoring programme online so that they can be accessed remotely. We will also continue to offer our Top-up and larger grants.

The grants can be used to buy new equipment, to work with a consultant, perhaps on a new website or for training.  For top up projects of between £3000 to £4000 it’s a simple application process to get back 35 per cent of your spend as a grant.  For example, a £3000 spend would give you a £1050 grant. We can also support larger grants up to a value of £20,000.

We appreciate that for many people this is a time of trying to stay safe and struggling with loss of income, so developing your business may not be your top priority.

Charities Aid Foundation Launches Coronavirus Emergency Fund (UK) – Currently paused to new applications

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has launched a new Coronavirus Emergency Fund. Through this fund smaller charities, not for profit organisations, social enterprises and unregistered community groups can apply for grants of up to £10,000 to help them to continue to deliver much needed support to within their communities. The funding is available to help with core costs, staffing, volunteer costs, supplies and equipment, communications or other critical charitable areas. The Coronavirus Community Support Fund is closing to applications on Monday 17 August 2020 at 12 noon

We opened the Government’s Coronavirus Community Support Fund on 22 May. So far, we’ve already awarded £55m of the £200 million Government gave us for this fund, to over 2,300 organisations and received applications totalling almost £130 million.

Because of this record high demand, we will close to applications on Monday 17 August at 12 noon.

You can still apply for National Lottery funded grants in England. But we will only be focusing on funding for organisations supporting people and communities who experience disproportionate challenge and difficulty as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, specifically for user-led equality groups supporting:

  • black, Asian, minority ethnic and refugee (BAMER) communities
  • lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer + (LGBTQ+) communities
  • disabled people.

This is for six months’ emergency funding, for small and medium organisations and for between £300 and £100K.

We are also working with specialist partners to reach specific groups as quickly as we can. You can find out more here.

Beyond the emergency response, National Lottery funding to support communities in England will be available, and we’ll keep you updated on our funding as it develops.

Alpkit Foundation Funding to Support Grassroots Organisations During the Coronavirus

In response to the coronavirus, The Alpkit Foundation are prioritising funding to support projects that demonstrate an immediate impact on those affected by the crisis.

Grants are available to grassroots organisations serving those affected by the outbreak. Funding can provide support for activities which might include

  • helping vulnerable and elderly people who are self-isolating,
  • supporting the homeless,
  • providing access to food, medicines or social care,
  • supporting foodbanks,
  • increasing the number of meals on wheels deliveries,
  • bringing exercise indoors.

Applications up to £500 can be made at any time and will be checked on a daily basis.

Anglian Water

Anglian Water is working with fifteen Community Foundations in the East of England, East Midland and Yorkshire to allocate their £1million Positive Difference Fund to support communities affected by the covid-19 pandemic. Charities and community organisations who are supporting vulnerable people who are isolated, considered high risk and in need of practical support can apply to their local Community Foundation. Half of the fund is being made available immediately, with the remaining half released later in the year to meet emerging needs from the fallout from the pandemic. Eligible organisations will be able to apply to their local Community Foundation for grants of up to £5,000. Projects could include support for foodbanks, services which tackles homelessness, and which provide groceries and/or ready-made meals. Arts Council England Culture Recovery Fund opening 10th August

Arts Council England has announced that it will open its new Culture Recovery Fund on the 10th August 2020. The fund will make grants of between £50,000 to £3 million to cultural organisations that were financially stable before Covid-19, but are now at imminent risk of failure. The type of organisations that can apply include Cultural organisations (both profit and not for profit); local authorities; universities and public sector bodies based in England. Aviva Grants of up to £50,000 Available for Community Projects (Closing date 13th October)

Aviva has launched the next round of its Community Fund. Aviva has teamed up with the fundraising platform Crowdfunder to offer funding of up to £50,000 to small charities and community interest groups in the UK with innovative ideas that benefit their community.  Every three months from January 2020 onwards, £250,000 will be split equally among Aviva’s UK employees to donate to the projects that matter to them most.

Aviva want to support projects that boost the resilience of communities in the face of uncertainty and will be supporting projects in two key areas:

  • Community resilience: tackling inequality and improving environments by building inclusive and resilient
    communities; or
  • Financial capability and inclusion: promoting financially inclusive communities, where people can better manage
    their finances and avoid problem debt

To take part the project must also be raising funds to develop a new approach, product or technology, pilot a new scheme, implement a new initiative, or expand existing services to a new area or beneficiary group. All beneficiaries must be in the UK.

The next closing date to apply to the Aviva Community Fund is the 13th October 2020.

The Barclays Foundation – COVID-19 Community Aid Package

The Barclays Foundation have announced a £100 million COVID-19 Community Aid Package – The package consists of two strands. £50million will be donated to charities chosen by Barclays and £50million will be donated by matching their employees’ personal donations (individual organisations cannot apply for this funding. The money will be disbursed principally in the UK. barclayscovid-19-community-aid-package/

Baring Foundation Funding to Strengthen Creative Opportunities for People with Mental Health Problems (Closing date 18th August)

The Baring Foundation has announced the first call for applications for their new Arts programme supporting Arts and Mental Health to strengthen the creative opportunities available for people with mental health problems.

The long-term funding programme is being made available to established organisations in the UK that focus solely on offering creative opportunities to people of any age living with mental health problems using the skills of professionally trained artists. £900,000 is available for this work in 2020 and it is envisaged that one-off unrestricted grants of between £12,000 and £15,000 will be awarded to be used to serve the organisation’s charitable purpose as they best see fit.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon on the 18th August 2020.

British Gas Energy Trust Launches £800,000 Covid Response Fund (Closing date 19th August)

The British Gas Energy Trust has launched its £800,000 Covid Response Fund. Nine grants of between £40,000 – £180,000 will be available to money advice and support charities in areas where the pandemic has had a severe impact on household incomes and where the demand for money, debt and energy advice services is likely to be high.

to be eligible, applications will need to address the following aims:

  • To help people avoid the burden of energy debt, make informed energy choices and improve their control over household finances. We envisage that this will lead to healthier homes and enhanced well-being.
  • To enhance the capacity of the organisations we fund, enabling the development and provision of holistic support, money, energy & advice services; for the benefit of people in financial hardship.

The British Gas Energy Trust has worked with the Centre for Sustainable Energy to identify areas facing the highest need. As a result the funding will be available in specific areas in England and Scotland.

British Red Cross Launches Hardship Fund

The British Red Cross are providing financial support to help the most vulnerable financially impacted by the covid-19 crisis. The British Red Cross Hardship Fund provides short term financial help for individuals who can’t afford essentials such as

  • Food and toiletries
  • Somewhere safe to sleep,
  • Access to a telephone and the internet
  • Fuel to keep the lights on, cook or stay warm

The fund aims to help people who can’t afford the essentials because they have:

  • No income or welfare support
  • Delays to accessing income or welfare support

The money will be delivered on a pre-paid card by either a one-off payment of £120 or a three-month grant of £360 which will be paid in three monthly instalments of £120. Families with children or other dependents can receive up to three grants, for a total of £1,080 over the three months.

The British Reds Cross will be working with statutory and voluntary partner organisations to ensure we are helping the people in greatest need but will only accept referrals from official Referral Partners who are registered with the Hardship Fund. https://hardshipfund.redcross.org.uk/

Comic Relief Announces Change Makers Programme (Closing date 28th August)

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Comic Relief will launch its new funding Change Makers funding programme to support changes in the way which community and voluntary sector organisations work.

Funding of between £150,000 and £600,000 will be available for projects lasting up to 3 to 5 years. The focus will be on work in areas that are of particular interest to Comic Relief.

This includes:

  • Addressing homelessness
  • Forced migration
  • Gender justice
  • Mental health
  • Early childhood development.

Organisations will be able to apply in one of two categories.

  • Small and medium-sized organisations that focus on equalities and are user-led. The organisation must have an annual income of at least £75,000. User-led organisations are considered to be those where the majority of the leadership (i.e. at least half of senior team and trustees) are from the community(ies) the organisation serves.
  • Other medium-sized organisations based in the UK. In this case the organisation needs to have a minimum annual income of £250,000.
  • Comic Relief will not accept applications from larger organisations with annual income greater than £10 million.

Applications can be made by single applicants. Organisations can also apply in partnership, with a lead partner holding the funding.

20% of the available funding is ring-fenced for efforts led by and working with BAME communities.

Common Call Grants Programme

Grants of between £1,000 and £3,000 are available to UK based social organisations led by people that identify as Black or Mixed with Black that have a positive impact on deprived communities and are providing services to people that have been adversely affected by the COVID crisis in terms of physical health, mental health and/or financially.

The grants are specifically aimed at supporting Black-led social enterprises and charities so that they are able to survive and even thrive in the COVID period.

The funding aims help grantees:

  • Get better informed about their options (moving to new methods of delivery) post-COVID19.
  • Develop new enterprising activities and earned income strategies.
  • Test the viability of specific propositions.
  • Develop clear implementable action plans for such activity.

This is a flexible fund that can be spent on anything that will help organisations best deliver impact to their beneficiaries. The funding is being made available by Do it Now Now’s Common Call Covid Fund.

The Cruach Trust (Closing date 18th September)

The Cruach Trust, which is a small charity, which provides financial support  of up to £1,500 for gardeners, retired gardeners and for preserving gardens throughout the United Kingdom has announced that the next deadline for applications is the 18th September 2020.  The funding is available to registered or recognised charities, societies, trusts or other bodies. There is a preference for small local and national charities.  Previous projects supported have included:

  • Supporting a horticultural apprenticeship, arranged through the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
  • Grants for gardens, wildlife and the natural environment.
  • Grants for music, the arts and cultural charities.
  • Grants for medical research and support.
  • Grants for organisations working with children, the elderly and vulnerable.

Local homelessness organisations that require emergency financial assistance can apply for grants of up to £100,000 to the COVID-19 Homelessness Response Fund.  A total funding pot of £5.5 million is available.

The funding aims to provide emergency financial assistance to local homelessness organisations, preventing closure, service cuts or staff redundancies threatened by increased operational costs and a loss of fundraised income due to the Coronavirus. It will also support organisations that have needed to expand or adapt their services in light of COVID-19 to support people experiencing homelessness safely and effectively.

The funding is available to organisations with a turnover of less than £5 million per year,

£4.82 million is provided by The National Lottery Community Fund for homelessness charities in England.

Emergency Funding to Help Young Refugees and Asylum Seekers Affected by the Coronavirus (Currently paused)

In response to the coronavirus, Hope for the Young have launched a Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund to support vulnerable young refugees or asylum seekers up to 30 years of age who are in need of immediate financial support.

Grants of up to £250 will be available for up to twelve weeks and will be allocated on a case by case basis to help relieve social isolation and financial hardship. Funding is available to help with costs such as purchasing food, medication and toiletries, and essential utilities.

The fund is open to external applications, however, in the first instance, priority will be given to young people receiving support from the Hope for the Young who meet the fund criteria. Hope for the Young aims to respond to all applications within one week of receipt to discuss the application further.

Finnis Scott Foundation (Closing date 28th September)

Established under the Will of Lady Montagu Douglas Scott (Valerie Finnis) in 2006, the Finnis Scott Foundation makes grants for any charitable purpose, but their present policy is to focus grant-making in the areas of horticulture and plant sciences, as well as fine art and art history.  The funding is open to charities and charitable organisations, including School Parent Teacher Associations.

Grants of up to £10,000 are available. Exceptionally, larger grants may be considered at the Trustees’ discretion. Preference is given to making grants to smaller charities where the grant would have a significant impact. The Foundation funds both capital and revenue projects.

The Foyle Foundation  – Small Grants Scheme

The Foyle Foundation has re-opened its Small Grants Scheme to support smaller, grass-roots and local charities across the UK during the Covid-19 crisis. Organisations which are currently delivering services to the young, vulnerable, elderly, disadvantaged or the general community either directly or through online support can apply for grants of between £1,000 and £10,000. Funding can be used to cover core costs or essential equipment, to enable ongoing service provision, homeworking, or delivery of online digital services for charities with a turnover of less than £150,000 per annum that can show financial stability and a clear need for their services. Foyle Foundation Re-opens its Main Grants Programme

The Foyle Foundation, which is one of the UK’s largest grant making charity,  has announced that its Main Grants Programme has re-opened for applications to support charities with a core remit of the Arts or Learning.

Within the Arts programme, the Foundation seeks applications that make a strong artistic case for support in either the performing or visual arts. The Foundations seeks to support organisations to stabilize and recover from the impact of Coronavirus.

Within the Learning programme, the Foundation will support projects which facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and learning and which have a long-term strategic impact. Key areas for support are libraries, museums and archives; special educational needs; projects that encourage sustainability by reducing overheads or which help generate additional revenue. This might include environmental improvements to save energy and lower carbon emissions where a cost benefit can be  demonstrated; projects and activities which increase access and widen the diversity of attenders/visitors.

In light of the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, the Foundation has revised its criteria and will change to make one-year grants only (no multi-year grants) to charities that can demonstrate ongoing financial stability for the next 12 months from the date of their application.  In addition, more grants will be available to cover core costs, favouring those charities with no, or without significant, public funding.

Five social enterprise support agencies have come together to deliver a new £18.7 million Social Enterprise Support Fund.  The fund will make grants of between £10,000 and £300,000 to support Social Enterprises affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.  This can include:

  • Meet additional demands
  • Changing the way Social Enterprises work
  • Making their spaces COVID-secure
  • Managing liquidity during the next six months.

To be eligible for support social enterprises must have been incorporated for at least a year and most of their beneficiaries need to be in England.  In addition, the social enterprise’s annual income must have been between £25,000 and £1.5 million before COVID-19, and financially stable.

Independent Age Grants Fund (Opens 27th July, closing date 21st August )

Independent Age, which promotes independent living amongst older people has launched a £2 million Independent Age Grants Fund to help smaller charities across the UK working with older people hardest hit by the Coronavirus.

Initially, Independent Age will begin by supporting work with two groups of older people, who can too easily miss out:

Older people living in particularly complex and challenging situations.  This can include older people that may have no network of family, friends or community to call on; have a disability or long-term health condition; be caring for a dependent adult with learning disabilities or dementia or be facing other circumstances that make it harder to manage at this challenging time.

Older people in danger of being out of sight and out of mind.  Independent Age are looking to help organisations connecting with older people who are very isolated and most at risk of missing out on the help available from government or charities that serve a very wide client group. They may be part of an isolated, neglected or very poor community, be facing stigma or discrimination or have needs which make it hard for them to access services, perhaps because they are homeless, live with HIV or are hidden from view in an abusive relationship.

To be eligible to apply the applicant organisation must be registered as a charity with The Charity Commission for England and Wales, The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, or The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).  The applicant organisations must have at least one paid member of staff (part-time is fine) and an annual income of £1 million or less (averaged across the last three financial years).

The applicant organisation must be already working with older people in one or both of the two priority areas above.  Organisations that do not specialise in work with older people are welcome to apply – but you must already be providing services for older people as part of their work.

The funding will be made available over four separate funding rounds. In each round Independent Age will make £500,000 available.

Charities are able to apply for grants of up to £15,000.

John Lewis new community support fund

A £1m Community Support Fund will be available to communities across the UK to help those in need in their local communities. Teams in each shop will work together with their communities to choose the best way to use the fund. Help could include setting up additional local delivery services to support the self-isolating, the vulnerable, the elderly and those looking after them; delivering boxes of staples to local care homes and community groups, and donating products to create care packages for customers to share with vulnerable neighbours.

£10 Million Package to Help Kick Start Tourism in Time for the Summer

Grants of up to £5,000 will be made available to small businesses in tourist destinations across England to help them adapt their businesses following the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of the government’s drive to boost the recovery of the economy, funding will be distributed immediately from its new £10 million Kick-starting Tourism Package to help kick start tourism in time for the summer.

Funding will be allocated to Local Growth Hubs based on how much of their employment base is linked to tourism and hospitality businesses, and can be used to pay for specialist professional advice such as human resources, legal or financial expertise, to adopt new technology and online systems, or to purchase new equipment.

Lloyds Foundation Grants of £50,000 Available to Help Charities Recover from the Covid-19 Crisis (Closing date 11th September)

 

Small and medium sized charities with an income of between £25,000 and £1 million a year can now apply for unrestricted grants of £50,000 to support them adapt their organisational, income generation and service delivery models which have been significantly impacted by COVID-19.

The focus will be on supporting charities that are helping people overcome complex social issues such as dependency, homelessness and domestic abuse.

The funding is being made available through the Lloyds Bank Foundation’s £7.4 million Covid Recovery Fund and the closing date for applications is the 11th September 2020.

A total of 140 charities will be supported.

Association of Mental Health Providers – Mental Health Response Fund

The Department of Health and Social Care has made £5 million available to support voluntary and community sector (VCS) mental health providers which are experiencing an increase in demand for their services due to coronavirus. National Lottery  – Coronavirus Community Support Fund

The Coronavirus Community Support Fund is closing to applications on Monday 17 August 2020 at 12 noon

We opened the Government’s Coronavirus Community Support Fund on 22 May. So far, we’ve already awarded £55m of the £200 million Government gave us for this fund, to over 2,300 organisations and received applications totalling almost £130 million.

Because of this record high demand, we will close to applications on Monday 17 August at 12 noon.

You can still apply for National Lottery funded grants in England. But we will only be focusing on funding for organisations supporting people and communities who experience disproportionate challenge and difficulty as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, specifically for user-led equality groups supporting:

  • black, Asian, minority ethnic and refugee (BAMER) communities
  • lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer + (LGBTQ+) communities
  • disabled people.

This is for six months’ emergency funding, for small and medium organisations and for between £300 and £100K.

Pet Rescue Funding to Support Organisations Affected by the Coronavirus

Pet rescue organisations can apply for funding to help support rescues throughout the short- and medium-term impact of the coronavirus. Through the Support Adoption for Pets Grant Programme, charities and not-for-profit organisations which rescue and rehome pets or provide temporary support to ensure pets can remain with their owners can apply for funding of up to £10,000 or up to 30% of total annual expenditure, whichever is the lower amount.

Funding must have a direct impact on animal welfare and can be used to cover vet bills, boarding costs, food, salaries of animal care staff, utilities and consumables. Priority will be given to organisations whose medium-term survival is at risk.

Phoenix Fund – New £1.4 million fund supporting BAME groups (Closing date for Round 1 – 21st August

The National Lottery Community Fund together with the Global Fund for Children have launched a new £1.4 million fund.

The Phoenix Fund, which is now open for applications, will support Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic charities and groups in England that are working in the heart of their communities, providing essential and emergency services, support, and education tailored to the BAME community.  In particular, those communities affected by Covid-19.

The Phoenix Fund supports groups that:

  • Are registered, unregistered, incorporated, unincorporated, and/or unconstituted
  • Work with participants and communities of any age
  • Are led by representatives of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities and work within BAME communities**
  • Have annual operating budgets up to £100,000 per year
  • Are located and work in England

A collaborative panel of individuals who have understanding and lived experience working with Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities will drive the fund’s grant-making decisions, awarding grants of up to £20,000 to BAME-centred and -led community organisations.

Phoenix Fund grant winners will receive flexible, core funding to meet critical needs and continue their organisations’ objectives.  There will be four funding rounds in 2020.  The closing date for round 1 is the 21st August 2020.

The Rank Foundation – Pebble Grants Programme – Currently open to applications for November Meeting

UK registered charities and recognised churches which are raising money for capital projects (building work, refurbishment or the purchase of long-term equipment) or a one-off short term activity (such as an annual respite break or holiday for disadvantaged young people) can apply for funding through the Rank Foundation – Pebble Small Grants programme.

To be eligible to apply the total project cost must be less than £150,000, the organisation must have an annual income of less than £500,000 and the organisation applying must already have raised a third of the total costs.

Applications can be submitted at any time and the Foundation is currently accepting applications for the November 2020 meeting of Trustees.  Please note that the Foundation do not publish deadlines or maximum amounts as this is dependent on the number of applications received.

Resilience and Recovery Loan Fund – Big Society Capital

Charities and, social enterprises in disadvantaged areas facing financial hardship and disruption to their trading due to the coronavirus will be able to apply for emergency funding from a £100 million programme of loans and investment. The emergency package is made up of a £25 million Resilience and Recovery Loan Fund to provide emergency loans with no fees or interest for the first twelve months; £29 million for smaller, emergency loans to small businesses in more deprived areas; and up to a further £50 million over the coming months for existing and future investments as needed. Applications for the Resilience and Recovery Loan Fund are expected to open in mid-April, with the first loans completed by the start of May. £266 Million Housing Fund for Rough Sleepers and Vulnerable People Affected by the Covid-19 Crisis (Closing date 20th August 2020)

The UK Government has announced a £266 million housing fund for rough sleepers and vulnerable people. The Next Steps Accommodation Programme makes funding available to councils and their local partners to help break the cycle of homelessness by ensuring as few people as possible helped off the streets and into emergency accommodation during the Covid-19 pandemic return to sleeping rough.

£105 million has been allocated to cover property costs and support new tenancies to ensure they continue to have a safe place to stay. £161 million has been allocated to help people into long term accommodation by delivering 3,300 units of longer-term, move-on accommodation.

£1 Million Crowdfunding Support for Sports Clubs and Organisations 

Sport England has committed another £1 million to combating the impact of coronavirus by match funding money raised by sports clubs and community activity groups through the fundraising platform Crowdfunder.

The Crowdfunder platform is scrapping all fees for the Active Together programme and is covering transaction charges to ensure every penny raised by a club goes to them. They’re also providing a series of monthly webinars offering advice and examples of successful previous Crowdfunder projects involving sport.

Through the ‘Active Together’ partnership with Crowdfunder Sport England are matching crowd funds of up to £10,000 raised by clubs and organisations hit by the coronavirus crisis.

Clubs and organisations can sign up via the Crowdfunder website.  They’ll then need to set their crowdfunding target and put in place incentives and rewards. Once 25% of the crowdfunding is met, Sport England will confirm the match funding – up to £10,000 – and can distribute the money within seven days of being raised.

To be eligible, organisations must be:

  • Local sports clubs
  • Charity, community, voluntary and social enterprise sector organisations that deliver sport and/or physical activity in their community – including organisations that are not solely or primarily sports organisations – for the benefit of people residing in England.

Pledge criteria

  • If the application is approved, projects get match funding of up to 50% towards their initial crowdfunding target – up to a maximum of £10,000.

To receive a pledge, projects need to do two things:

  • Raise at least 25% of the initial target
  • Raise this from a minimum number of supporters (dependent on the size of the initial target).

Theatres Trust – Theatre Reopening Fund (Closing date 5th October)

The Theatres Trust has announced that theatres across the UK can apply for grants of up to £5,000 to address urgent building repairs, improve operational viability, introduce environmental improvements, and enhance physical accessibility. In response to the coronavirus crisis, the scheme will now be able to support theatres to cover the additional costs of reopening after several months’ closure.  This can include:

  • alterations to circulation spaces to enable social distancing
  • changes to ventilation systems
  • purchase and installation of Perspex screens and sanitisation stations
  • any other equipment and building improvements that support reopening

To be eligible for funding, the theatre must be run by a charity or not-for-profit group that can clearly demonstrate the value capital improvements to their theatres would make to their work in local communities. Please note that applications for technical equipment and refurbishment of soft furnishings are a low priority for the scheme.

To be eligible the applicant:

  • must own or manage theatres with titles or signed leases of more than 5 years on buildings;
  • demonstrate that they run a regular theatre programme of professional, community and/or amateur work presenting no less than 30 performances a year;
  • and have a bona fide UK charitable or not-for-profit legal structure and be able to provide certified or audited accounts for at least two years.

Volant Trust Announces Launch of Covid-19 Response Fund (Opened 1st August)

The Volant Trust has opened its Covid-19 Response Fund.  The Trust is accepting applications from registered charities, community interest companies, community organisations or social enterprises in the UK and internationally that demonstrate a strong focus on alleviating social deprivation and helping vulnerable groups who have been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Funding is available to support running and core costs as well as for medical equipment and the production or distribution of PPE will also be considered.

Yorkshire Building Society’s Charitable Foundation – Funding to Support Charities and Communities Affected by Coronavirus

The Yorkshire Building Society’s Charitable Foundation has launched a Coronavirus Response Fund to support registered charities that are helping local communities affected by the coronavirus. Funding will support groups and activities that

  • Help vulnerable people who are self-isolating.
  • Ensure supplies for foodbanks and organisations, in particular to alleviate the impact of children no longer receiving free school meals due to school closures.
  • Help community response coordination, including volunteer costs.
  • Cover additional costs of working remotely and adapting services delivered in the wider community
  • Cover the loss of income for charities providing support for vulnerable groups

The £100,000 fund will make donations of between £250 and £2,000 to help with costs such as running costs, staff and travel costs, and volunteer expenses.

Priority will be given to:

  • Charities that have an income of £100,000 or less.
  • Charities that support the ongoing needs of vulnerable people to ensure that their health and wellbeing is maintained.
  • Charities that support the ongoing needs of people suffering from poverty or those who have suffered a loss of income

Veolia Environmental Trust Grants (Closing date 3rd September 2020)

The next closing date for stage 1 applications to the Veolia Environmental Trust is the 3rd September 2020 for projects that will start between 23rd September 2020 and the 5th January 2021.
Grants of between £10,200 and £75,000 are available to constituted not for profit organisations and registered Environmental Bodies towards:
• Community buildings
• Parks and paths, play, Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs) and recreational facilities
• Nature reserves
• Bio diversity projects.

Funding for Christian Projects Focusing on Improving Young Peoples Lives

Grants of up to £25,000 are now available to churches and Christian organisations to help them connect with children and young people and forge lasting links with families in their area. Support is available for projects that focus on improving the lives of young people (aged 0-18) and encouraging church growth as young people discover faith for themselves and begin to play an active part in church communities.

Examples of the types of items that can be funded include:

  • Musical instruments for a junior choir;
  • Soft play sessions for toddlers and;
  • Transforming an under used room into a chill out zone for young people.

Funding to Help Understand the Impact of Covid-19 on the Health and Social Care System (Closing date 30th September)

Funding of between £100,000 and £200,000 is available for projects of up to twelve months which seek to understand the impact of Covid-19 on the health and social care system in the UK, and to use this research to inform policy and/or service delivery decisions for the future.

The Health Foundation’s new Covid-19 Research Programme is open to suitable qualified and experienced research teams to help understand the impact of the crisis in two areas:

  • how service delivery has changed,
  • the impact of the virus on health inequalities and the wider effects of health.

Applications for projects from multidisciplinary teams combining expertise from a broad range of disciplines, involving patients, the public and people with lived experience are welcome.

Funding to Help BAME-Led Organisations Access Coronavirus Funds

In response to the coronavirus, the UK Community Foundations is making a £250,000 Infrastructure Fund available for BAME-led infrastructure organisations that can help other BAME-led organisations apply for National Emergency Trust (NET) grants though their local Community Foundations.

Grants of between £5,000 and £20,000 are available to fund work such as for example:

  • Awareness-raising via marketing and communications
  • Mentoring/supporting of groups through the local Community Foundation application process
  • Support with monitoring and reporting
  • Provision of micro grants to enable applications for NET funding through community foundations
  • Building relationships to help community foundations identify and address barriers to funding BAME-led organisations and communities

Applications can be made on a rolling basis and will be considered by an independent panel every week with awards made as quickly as possible thereafter.

Funding to Help Disadvantaged Young People and Children

Charities in England and Wales can apply for Early Years Opportunities Grants through the Masonic Charitable Foundation. The Early Years Opportunities programme is open to charities that help disadvantaged children and young people (up to the age of 25 years) overcome the barriers they face to achieve the best possible start in life.

Grants can be offered to charities that provide:

  • Mental and physical health support
  • Learning and development, including language and communication skills, social and emotional etc.
  • Parental support, including whole family approach
  • Pastoral and advocacy support

The type of activities that could be funded include:

  • Additional educational opportunities such as improving literacy and numeracy
  • Individual interventions, i.e. parent education, home visiting or mentoring
  • Encouraging healthy behaviours with regards to diet, activity and wellbeing
  • Psychological interventions for domestic abuse and behavioural issues etc.
  • Provision of vital adaptive technologies and equipment removing barriers
  • Alternative methods or specialist therapies to help children and young people integrate into the mainstream education system.

The programme offers both small grants of up to £5,000 per year for up to 3 years to charities with an annual income of up to £500,000 ; and grants on average of between £20,000 and £60,000 to charities with an annual income of above £500,000 for projects lasting up to three years.

Funding to Help Museums, Galleries and Cultural Organisations Affected by Coronavirus

UK public museums, galleries, historic houses, libraries and archives can apply for funding to help them respond to immediate challenges connected to the Covid-19 crisis, and to adapt and reimagine ways of working in the future.

Through the Art Fund’s Respond and Reimagine grants, funding of between £10,000 and £50,000 is available to support the priority areas of audiences, collections, adaptable digital skills and infrastructure, and supporting the workforce. Funding can be used to provide immediate practical support connected to reopening such as staffing, equipment, training, or planning for future activities, and to provide opportunities for organisations to help them adapt for the future.

There are two further funding rounds for these grants:

Funding to Help Religious Organisations Support Communities Affected by Coronavirus

In response to the coronavirus, the Allchurches Trust is making grants of up to £50,000 available to churches, Christian Charities, cathedrals and Christian denominational bodies to enable them to implement new ways of working and introduce new and/or enhanced support and activities to meet changing need within communities across the UK & Republic of Ireland.

The Hope Beyond Programme will look to address three themes:

  • Projects responding to the issues of loneliness and isolation exacerbated by the Coronavirus pandemic where new and/or enhanced support is being proposed. This could include enabling improved accessibility to buildings/activities, including making buildings COVID-19 safe for access – as long this is to enable new and/or enhanced support to be offered.
  • Projects focused on growing community resilience and promoting mental and emotional health and wellbeing, including the provision of mental health and wellbeing support groups and 1:1 counselling for people of all ages (including clergy).
  • Projects focused on growing technological capability and resilience, particularly increasing digital capacity and provision, and supporting those without online access to get online through training and support.

Grants are available to help fund:

  • Capital costs, such as adaptation of buildings and the purchase of equipment
  • Project-related salaries and some other revenue costs (to the end of 2021), such as training of staff and/or volunteers, hire of buildings and/or equipment, and promotion and marketing of new activities

The amount awarded will depend upon the cost of the project and (where applicable) the level of need in the community (which will be assessed based on applicable deprivation indices), ranging from 10% of project cost through to 80%.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and there is no fixed deadline while funds for the programme are still available.

Funding to Help Small Charities and Social Enterprises Recover from the Covid-19 Pandemic (Closing date 7th September 2020)

The Fore has launched the second round of their RAFT funding in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to support small charitable organisations and social enterprises as they recover and adapt to the post-lockdown world. The Transition Fund will offer grants of up to £15,000 in two rounds for organisations with an annual turnover of less than £500,000.

The funding can be used

  • To adapt their services to meet changing beneficiary needs (for example, setting up a new programme for people experiencing increased stress or isolation)
  • To build capacity for increased needs after the acute phase of the crisis has passed (for example, growing or upskilling the staff team in expectation of increased demand)
  • To provide immediate services to vulnerable groups (for example, switching the organisation’s work to providing food to the hungry or urgent psychological support for those in distress)
  • To switch existing programmes to remote delivery (for example, by purchasing equipment or software for working virtually).

Those charities working with marginalised groups and led by people in the community that have found it hard to access funding in the past are encouraged to apply.

Local and national charities in England and Wales can apply to the Later Life Inclusions grants programme run by the Masonic Charitable Foundation. The Later Life Inclusion grants programme is open to charities working to reduce loneliness and isolation of vulnerable and disadvantaged people over 50.

Grants can be offered to charities that provide:

  • Mental and physical health support
  • Gateway and access to service, e.g. transport and technology
  • Community based approaches, i.e. volunteering, positive ageing and neighbourhood support
  • Advocacy, social and welfare support

The type of activities that could be funded include:

  • Support for emotional and psychological planning for later life
  • Digital inclusion sessions to enable older people to access services
  • Activities and clubs enabling older people to remain active and make friends
  • Providing companionship and befriending schemes for periods of transition
  • Advice and information on options for those with health conditions
  • Carers and respite support

Funding to Support the Most At-Risk Young People Affected by the Covid-19 Crisis

The 7stars foundation exists to support the most challenged, at-risk young people in the United Kingdom. In July The Foundation is launching an unrestricted Charity Support Fund for UK charities with a turnover of less than £1.5m, who are working with at-risk young people affected by the covid-19 crisis.

The funding will be made available across the themes of

  • abuse;
  • addiction;
  • homelessness;
  • and for those who are supporting young child carers.

The charity is offering grants of up to £2,500, which can be used for overheads, salary costs, and/ or wherever else the organisation needs to apply the money to ensure its survival and sustainable services in the future.

Funding for Projects that Improve People’s Lives

The Henry Smith Charity provides grants of between £20,000 and £60,000 per year for up to three years to charitable organisations (charities and not-for-profit organisations, including social enterprises) that help people when other sources of support have failed, are inappropriate, or are simply not available.
The charity has six funding priorities that describe the work they support and how they want to bring about change for the most disadvantaged people in the greatest need. These are:
• Help at a critical moment – Helping people to rebuild their lives following a crisis, critical moment, trauma or abuse.
• Positive choices – Helping people, whose actions or behaviours have led to negative consequences for themselves and others, to make positive choices.
• Accommodation / housing support – Enabling people to work towards or maintain accommodation.
• Employment and training – Supporting people to move towards or gain employment.
• Financial inclusion, rights and entitlements – Supporting people to overcome their financial problems and ensure that they are able to claim their rights and entitlements.
• Support networks and family – Working with people to develop improved support networks and family relationships
Grants can cover running costs, salaries and project costs for organisations that can demonstrate a track record of success and evidence the effectiveness of their work. Eligible organisations include charities and not-for-profit organisations (including social enterprises) in the UK with a turnover of £50,000 – £2 million (in exceptional circumstances up to £5 million).
