28 Oct Good News Stories from our Community Builders (17th October to 30th October) – SAVS
Kayleigh Wilkins, Victoria – Sponsored by St Vincent’s Southend
“I went along to the volunteer day at Churchill gardens where Rachel Ellis – Environmental and green space project officer, parks and open spaces – had a marquee from Make Southend Sparkle set up at the entrance on Carnarvon Road. There were litter picks, bag hoops and small hedge clippers for anyone who wanted to get involved and help tidy up the green space. She also had free bags and water bottles to give to the volunteers who helped. I took a litter pick set and went to help. Paul Rabbits was also there helping out as well as a parks team and a volunteer.
One of the volunteers was talking to me about his normal day-to-day job as a postman which he has done for about five years now and really enjoys it. He also mentioned giving back to the community when he can and loves the peacefulness of Churchill Gardens.
I spoke to one of the parks team whilst litter picking and mentioned to him that quite a few members of the community have mentioned that they would like to see the waterfall turned back on within Churchill gardens. He said they need to look into how to turn it back on but it could be a possibility.

Chiquitta Bruce, Milton – Sponsored by Milton Community Partnership
Businesses along Hamlet Court Road participated in an Art Trail last month that was organised by Chiquitta, our Milton Community Builder, and featured artwork by local artists from the New City Gallery.
Communities have successfully connected thanks to the trail. It brought new people to the area and saw them enter stores they were unaware existed. If anyone missed the art trail, they may still find local artists by taking a stroll down Hamlet Court road. There is still art on the walls and in the windows of some of the businesses that have chosen to purchase work or enable artists to continue their displays.
Chiquita would like to say a big thank you to all involved.

Rob Carvosso, Shoebury – Sponsored by Shoebury Residents Association
The Garden Group at Norton Place had a great session. After preparing the ground the new polytunnel finally went up. It was a great team effort from Paula our link worker, the east PCN team, Ryan from everyone health, Chris Gosling and My Town Shoebury workshop and the Garden group. We had a team lunch and the group exchanged ideas, the garden group and the workshop team discussed what could be produced to go in the new polytunnel and what the workshop could make for the spring to go into the garden.
The group has really progressed well and the garden is really starting to take shape and so great to see partners and groups coming together to support each other and improve a space that all the community can enjoy.
