Helping Afghan Refugees and Understanding Hate Crimes – Welcome to the UK

Welcome to the UK has been continuing to offer our members 1:1 support with school applications, finding the right GP, translation services and much more. Our aim is to help our members really understand how things work in the UK so they can be more confident and independent.

Ilda, our Founder & Coordinator, has also been in touch with the team at Southend Borough Council to discuss the amazing support they are giving the Afghan refugees. We have been looking at how Welcome to the UK can provide ongoing support as well. Then Ilda met with one of the main Hate Crime Officers at Essex Police. They are going to provide us with training so that we can spot the signs of a hate crime, how to report it and how to help avoid it.

Finally, Ilda was invited to learn more about Southend becoming a city and how the whole community can come together to build solidarity, cohesion and best of all, be a sanctuary for all. We feel very proud as a charity to be so involved in our community and to work with such inspiring people to help make Southend a better place for all!
