21 Jul Rogue Trader Alert: Roofing Repairs
Essex Trading Standards is warning residents about traders offering roofing repairs. Over recent months we have seen an increased amount of reports relating to rogue roofers.
It is widely recognised that sometimes these individuals make approaches at the door, often pointing out a small repair that might be needed and then this quickly escalates with pressure being applied to the home owner to part with significant sums of money.
Sadly, we are now also seeing these individuals infiltrating community groups such as Nextdoor and via Facebook sales and community groups. If a member asks for a recommendation they, or their associates, are responding and recommending the business – then those individuals will often get to the property sometimes the same day making it difficult for the home owner to get other quotes etc.
We often advise not to solicit any home improvement works via a leaflet through the door and sadly it seems that residents must also be cautious of local online sites and groups.
Our advice remains to only use a trader that has either been recommended by close friends and family or to consider using our Buy With Confidence trader approval website. This is the only trades website where traders are vetted and approved by Trading Standards. Look out for your neighbours and report any concerns to Essex Police on 101 or to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline or call 0808 223 1133.
