SEND the Right Message Bouldering Club

Why has SEND the Right Message started the Bouldering Club?

Bouldering is an easily accessible sport, which can provide numerous physical and mental health benefits to neurodivergent children.

Many neurodivergent children are already primed to seek out vestibular sensory activities – that’s why so many of our STRM children take to bouldering like ducks to water. That doesn’t exclude those children who are sensory averse – in fact, it offers them the freedom to engage with the activity in their own time, at their own pace. They are fully in control of their learning and progression.

Climbing works their muscles, but it also exercises their mind. Climbing isn’t a thoughtless activity; to develop climbing proficiency you have to engage your pre-frontal cortex: focus, planning, problem solving, holding visual-spatial learning in your working memory. Climbing helps a child to use and develop all of those executive functions.

The therapeutic benefits should not be understated either. Bouldering and climbing offers a strong and supportive community, where there are no winners or losers, only personal goals, which are measurable and immediate.

Thank you to Sport England, Southend-on-Sea City Council and indirock_ for supporting this great initiative for STRM.
