Southend in Sight celebrates members success at British Blind Sport competition

Southend in Sight, Southend’s local, independent sight loss charity, is celebrating the success of two of its members who have won first place in a bowling competition.

Anne Morris and Keith Dowson ventured up to Sheffield on the weekend of 14th May, for the British Blind Sport bowling finals, entering into the competition for the Brenda Moore Memorial Cup. They took the top spot, winning a trophy and individual awards.

Anne said “It was so great to compete against other visually impaired bowlers again after such a long time away. Keith and I were delighted to win, and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the other teams.”

Catherine Hodgson, Community Fundraiser for the charity said, “We wouldn’t have expected anything less than first place from the dynamic duo with all their years of bowling experience!”

Lockdown took its toll on the regular bowling sessions that the members of Southend in Sight enjoyed. The team competed often, frequently winning matches and competitions around the country before the pandemic. They now meet on a Thursday at CJs in Hockley for social and league bowling.

Lucy Martin, CEO of Southend in Sight said, “It is wonderful to see Anne and Keith back out competing and winning! Bowling is a great sport for the visually impaired and we know that our members have really missed it over the last two years. We can’t wait to see what Anne, Keith and the team achieve next.”

Southend in Sight is the Community Services Division of the long-established Southend Blind Welfare Organisation. Its base at 117 Hamlet Court Road offers support, advice and equipment to young and old experiencing sight issues. During the pandemic many of its services moved online and it stayed connected with its members and service users via phone calls and doorstep deliveries, maintaining a vital link with them.  It is currently only open for booked appointments, but the charity’s shop at the same address, is open daily Monday to Saturday.
